Like last summer, I’ve put together a tidy list of my summer reading that I hope to tackle over the next couple months. I probably won’t get to the bottom of this list, given that I’m also doing a research project to complete my graduate degree, but that doesn’t stop me from dreaming. Here goes:
A War Like No Other by Victor Davis Hanson – The Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta crippled Greece and brought a cultural and economic power to its knees. What lessons can America learn from the mistakes of the past?
What it Feels Like to Get Punched by a Champion by Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield – An interactive pop-up book for children.
Collapse by Jared Diamond – Why do great civilizations fail? What leads some to collapse while others are able to find innovative solutions to the same problems? I’m looking forward to this book after enjoying Diamond’s remarkable Guns, Germs & Steel.
Friendship by Sunshine Fistblood – An heartwarming, inspirational book about the genocide and systematic rape of the Armenian population in World War I. Also, there’s a chapter about friendship.
Manhunt by James L. Swanson – story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth a renowned 19th century actor who apparently killed a politician of some repute.
Dove Blood: A Memoir by Wilford Brimley – The great man tells the story of his battle with “diabetus” and how he will blast you in the face with a shotgun if you take him on.
You hilarious son of a bitch, “Sunshine Fistblood” made me laugh RIGHT as I got on the phone with a pharmacist!
Manhunt actually sounds pretty good. let us know how that goes. Dove Blood would give me nightmares. i already have nightmares where Wilford appears to be selling me oatmeal, and then reveals he’s poisoned them with diabetes. then he tries to sell me a blood sugar machine and if i don’t buy one, he’ll put me in Our House reruns for the rest of my days.
I am reading Man Hunt as well, and I am really enjoying it. I am picking up a lot of dating tips and pointers – Oh wait, I notice the book on your list is called Manhunt by James L. Swanson. Not Man Hunt by Janet “single and lovin it” Swanson. Crap, don’t tell my fiance…
I never understood why Brimley’s previous book about ways to stay young at heart (with suggestions like “bathe in babies blood”) wasn’t a best seller.
