While recently enjoying the underrated cuisine at a Village Inn in Virginia, MN, I came across this interesting framed photograph while on an urgent trip to the restroom. After loudly relieving myself, I took a more leisurely look at this item before making my way back to our table.
A distinguished group of strapping lads and delicate ladies, dressed in all their summertime finery. A lovely photograph and wonderful ambiance, indeed. However, a closer look at the engraving raised an eyebrow.
1996? My, how times have changed since I graduated high school! In my head, 1996 was a heady, post-grunge era of Birkenstock sandals and Ally McBeal. A lovely era when men wore sideburns and women had bangs and all wore flannel. Rose-tinted glasses indeed, when faced with actual images of this period.
Turns out that 1996 was a time of ankle-length skirts and woolen trousers. It was a time when young men with names like Clement and Ambrose courted 12 year old girls while sipping cups lemonade and sitting on creaky front porch swings. All my memories are for naught as I am now forced to confront the reality that my friends and I wore bowler hats and suspenders and listened to No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” on the gramophone.
It suddenly makes sense that at our 10 year reunion last year I learned 25% of our classmates had died of polio.

reminds me of one of the funniest (and perhaps unnoticed?) gags in a RockTV… it was the “100 Years of the Rock” one where they showed the “early 1900′s” Rock band. there was a shot of jeremy with the subtitle “Obediah Darling”, then another of Jason with something like, “Ambrose Roath”, then a shot of me with simply “Tom Hipps” (insinuating i’d been around that long).
i’d still like to know who came up with that gag so i can congratulate/punch him:)
That was probably Luker…
just had to say, Tim, I noticed (shocker there hey?!) and that was also one of my favorite little gags
way to go Luker if you’re right Peter!!
Man…so quick to sell Luker out, Peter.
