I'm reading this book right now. It's like reading something out of today's headlines. You'd think we would learn from history, but apparently not.

I got this book for Christmas. It should make a nice companion piece to "Liberal Fascism".

If you tell a Democrat that the New Deal was a massive failure, he or she will assume you are joking. There is no room in the liberal mind to even consider this possibility.

When I was a sophomore, our high school did a performance of Annie, which ends with Annie uniting with Warbucks, who has joined FDR in forging the new deal, as the chorus sings "We're Getting a New Deal For Christmas!"

The 1980s movie version has a Republican Warbucks battling communists, but otherwise sticks to the orphan thing.

Thank God for Reagan.

I think the important question is, how much did the elephant butt-lickers get paid?

If you can pay your bills and feed your family...

In our econ class we learned that John M. Keynes proposed a "solution" to increase GDP (which is consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports ? imports)) that won him a Nobel Prize. He couldn't do anything about consumption or investment, but he could advise the government to spend more... which it ultimately did and has done ever since. It is seen as a lever politicans can pull to affect demand side economics and short cut to economic growth. FDR obviously helped implement the strategy. The image of government lawyers not understanding market competition is a telling example of how "an instrument of unimagined power for the establishment of a morally better world" came to exert its influence.

Sounds like a good book.
