Movie Talker – To Talk Or Not to Talk

The other day, I was watching a movie in a theater with some friends. It was supposed to be a comedy, but I couldn’t stomach a laugh. If I hadn’t gone with a couple of friends, I would have already been in another theater by this point. Especially a movie like this, one that would have been better to rent than pay a million dollars to see. It’s getting down right expensive to see a movie nowadays. After you factor in the pop, candy, and the price of your ticket, you almost need to take out a second mortgage. Anyway, I’m not really into the movie, and I can’t leave. I start biting my lip because I have a bad habit which drives my friends crazy. All of a sudden, I hear a familiar sound; a guy two rows down has the same condition as myself. My dimples take form for the first time this evening. The guy two rows down is a movie talker.

For those of you who are not familiar with my condition, let me showcase some of our best characteristics. They’re three kinds of movie talkers. Sometimes it is possible for a person to have all three of these traits but usually a movie talker is one of the three.

The first kind of movie talker is what I will call the Good Buddy. Don’t be deceived, this kind of movie talker is definitely not. The 123movies Good Buddy likes to talk to the characters on the screen like they are friends. They may say things like, “Don’t go into that room! Someone is waiting on the other side of the door–they’re going to kill you!!” This individual will inadvertently unfold the plot of the movie. It is important to remember that the Good Buddy does not always realize what they are doing. Whether or not the Good Buddy has previously seen the movie, is not necessarily a prerequisite for their movie talking. Unfortunately, whether they are right or wrong regarding the films outcome, does not change the fact that they are still talking during the movie.

The next kind of movie talker might think they have a sixth sense for unravelling a great mystery, but really they are nothing more than someone who points out the already known. I call this movie talker…Captain Obvious. Captain Obvious’ special power only appears in predictable movies. Captain Obvious might say things like, “Did you see that jump?” Which movie do you think we’re watching here captain? Or, “That’s the guy from earlier, remember he was in the background when so and so died.” Although Captain Obvious may seem like a pretty annoying movie talker, there is one more movie talker who is far worse.

How to Select a Great Movie to Watch

Sometimes you just feel like a girls’ or a blokes’ night in, and so comes the question of how to select a great movie to watch. My friend Sam always told us that a group of three people should never go into a DVD rental store at the same time, because you’ll end up being there for hours and never really decide on which movies to hire.

When we’re selecting movies, we never go for the latest releases, because you pay a premium rate for movies that are new to the DVD shelves.

If you always select the movies that have been around for a while, then guess what? You have your own selection of “new” movies to choose from after a few months sincehat time the latest releases are down put locker graded to recent releases at a discounted price. Not only do you save yourself some money, but you’ve also got a much better chance of having the “pick of the bunch” of the recent releases.

Here’s a list of things to help you decide how to select a great movie to watch:

1. Selection by a theme

Whether it’s a blokes night or a chicks night, you can decide a theme. Some great chick flicks include the “Bonnet Movies” the genre of Jane Austin’s “Pride and Prejudice”, “Emma” and so on.

For the blokes you may select the “X-Men” series, James Bond or such like.

2. Selection by Actor or Actress

Often we’ll sit and watch a bunch of Russell Crowe or Nicole Kidman movies, you may have some favorite actors and actresses that will help you in your choice of movies to watch.

3. Selection by Genre

There’s some great movies to motivate young sports players, such as Basketball, Baseball, or Grid Iron movies. You may be a fan of horror movies, romantic comedies, or action thrillers.

4. True Stories

They say that there’s nothing stranger than real life, and when Hollywood screen writers are looking at new ideas for movie storylines, they often turn to taking historical events and making some great movies.

Within the category of true stories you still have a wonderful selection of movies to watch about sporting heroes, national heroes, and even ordinary folk that have done some extraordinary things.

5. Selection by ratings

When selecting a great movie to watch, you need to consider the audience, as this can help with your decision making. If you are choosing movies for a bunch of young children then it’s generally a good idea to have watched those movies yourself first, so that you don’t have any surprises that could shock or scare the children.

6. Choosing a Foreign Language Movie

Whilst there’s a whole heap of great English Language movies, there’s also some fantastic foreign language movies that deserve your attention.

Do not be afraid to consider foreign films just because they have subtitles. After the first few minutes of watching a foreign movie and reading the subtitles you soon get drawn into the movie and almost “forget” that you are not listening to English.

7. Word of Mouth

We’ve never really found that personal referrals of movie titles from our friends have been of much benefit. Everybody has different tastes, and just because one person doesn’t like a particular movie doesn’t necessarily mean that you will not enjoy it.

This is often true with media movie critics. We’ve all heard stories about movies that have been slammed by the critics only to become box office successes.

There’s plenty of other ways to decide how to select a great movie to watch that include watching the previews or movie trailers, as well as watching movie review shows on TV and the internet.

The Best 10 Movies About Magic of All Time

So here we go, the best 10 movies about ‘magic’ of ‘all time’. That’s a tall order and will of course become a list that will be challenged by many.

What I have tried to do is collate a list of movies that feature films which have magical themes or very obvious magical references in them. Of course the rash of Harry Potter films, the excellent Lord of the Rings trilogy and even Star Wars could be included. However, from a desire to expand the list of magician inspired or magically themed movies I have left these out as being ‘too obvious’.

For reasons of brevity I have also not included fully animated movies in this list, so the likes of Fantasia, Sword in the Stone and even The Illusionist (Sylvian Chomet’s 2010 film) are not considered.

I’ve also ignored television series, such as The Magician (Bill Bixby trained by Mark Wilson), Jonathan Creek, the quirky 1970’s TV series Ace of Wands as well as specific Colombo, Midsummer Murders, One Foot in the free movies Grave episodes that were based around magic and magicians.

So this brings us to a quick round-up of some of the best of the magician-in-the-movies films I am aware of. Starting with those just outside the Top Ten – not because of any lack of quality, just because they are a little peripheral to the main list.

Passport to Pimlico (1949) directed by Henry Cornelius and featuring great performances from Stanley Holloway and Margaret Rutherford. This great Ealing comedy contains a sequence on the tube train where magician of the day The Great Masoni, drops his case allowing his doves to escape adding to the surreal nature of the comic moment.

Dead of Night (1945) directed by Alberto Cavancanti is a superb Ealing portmanteau horror movie which contained a series of stories about a dream told by a guest arriving at remote farmhouse. The film is said to have influenced cosmologists Hoyle, Gold and Bondi to develop the ‘steady state theory’. They were inspired by the circular nature of the films narrative. However the movie contains a story about a ventriloquist and a less than charming dummy. Ventriloquism is related to the magical arts, hence its inclusion here. The story is the forerunner of one that is actually in the list, Magic, starring Anthony Hopkins.

Thirty Nine Steps (1939) directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The original and perhaps greatest version of this film the climax of which is takes place as in a theatre where a ‘memory man’ is performing. The Memory Act can be considered as a subset of the magical art of Mentalism. The great magician Harry Lorraine is world famous not only for his ‘magic’ act but also for his contribution to the training and development of the human memory.

The Raven (1963) directed by Roger Corman sees the great Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff as medieval magicians involved a magical duel. This fun, camp and colourful movie loosely based on the Edgar Allen Poe poem The Raven, is not the greatest example of the Corman-Price collection, but is great fun.

Night of the Demon (1957) Jaques Tourneur. This great movie is an adaptation of M R James’ story “Casting the Runes”. Starring Dana Andrews as a sceptical psychologist ‘cursed’ by the Faustian looking magician and ‘cult’ leader Julian Karswell (Nial MacGinnis). In one sequence Karswell dressed as Dr Bobo performs magic at a children’s party. The conversation which then ensues between the psychologist and the magician holds within it a host of performance frames and ideas for budding bizarrists out there!. Tourneur apparently never wanted the audience to ‘see’ the demon. I many ways I wish he had had his way. The film would be even creepier and scarier if the terror was left to the imagination – again bizarre magicians take note!

Upcoming Zombie Movies

The latest Zombie Movies of 2013-14

Zombies have of late gained a large amount of interest in pop culture. The reasons might be myriad – a morbid fascination with apocalypse situations, a metaphor for the way that most people allow themselves to be herded like sheep, a growing fear stemming from recent virulent diseases that have wreaked havoc on populations. Whatever the reasons may be, Zombies now have their own genre despite seeming mindless, no pun intended.

Though first featured in White Zombie (1932), it wasn’t until the premier of Night of the Living Dead (1968) that Zombies in movies really garnered attention from the majority of the viewing public. A slew of Resident Evil movies later, Zombie movies were regarded as a completely action and horror oriented subject. With the release of Shaun of the Dead (2004) though, Zombie movies have been explored for their comic value, thus bursting the dam on what can be done with thousands of mindless, smelly creatures all intent on eating those still alive. The success of AMC’s The Walking Dead, a zombie apocalypse survival television series, has promptly brought on the year of the zombie, with more than a dozen films and ventures that attempt to cash in on the success that these undead freaks of nature have achieved. Here we take a look at some of the Zombie movies set to be released soon:

World War Z – One of the biggest zombie movies to be released yet, WWZ stars Brad Pitt in the leading role as Gerry Lane, a United Nations worker whose task is to coordinate resistance and help stop the global Zombie epidemic that threatens to tear down human civilization. Based on the eponymous book by Max Brooks, the director, Marc Forester portrays the Zombie cadres like a colony of ants whose strength is in numbers. With a budget in excess of $200 million, Paramount Pictures is set to release the film in June of this year. This is likely to set a record as the highest grosser of Zombie movies 2013-14.

Warm Bodies – Based on a book by Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies is a Zombie romantic comedy that explores Zombie love. Jonathan Levine, who wrote the screenplay and also directed the movie, ventures into the untested by providing a Zombie’s perspective. Nicholas Hoult stars as Zombie who shows signs of yesmovies human emotions towards Teresa Palmer’s character and the movie explores the possibility of humans and zombies living in a harmonious environment. Released early February of this year, this Zombie movie has already grossed over $100 million, making this a must watch for any Zombie movies lover.

The 4th Reich – Combining the two greatest villainous entities in Hollywood, this Sean Bean starrer terrifies movie goers with Nazi Zombies. Directed and written by Shaun Robert Smith, this World War 2 era movie portrays an elite team of a British Infantry Division as they go about killing Nazis and eliminating the threat of Zombies created by Nazi scientists during their experiments to create a superior human race. Set to be released late this year, The 4th Reich is another in a long list of WW2 movies, but with a slightly undead twist.

Invasion of the Not Quite Dead – A dark comedy thriller about the inhabitants of a small island off the coast of England that is turned into Zombie death trap by a deadly virus, this is one of the more entertaining Zombie movies, written and directed by Anthony Lane is not one to miss. Starring relatively well known Andrew Ellis and Ajay Nayyar, the movie promises a unique look at how a small group of survivors face the rigors and challenges of escaping Zombies.

RAID and the Ideal External Media Drive

For many people, editing video using your internal hard drive as a scratch disk (where you store your audio/video material) is a fine choice. But what happens when you begin to edit multiple layers of video and include stacked filters, motion effects and composites? Your ability to handle real-time playback will decrease because there are more rendering tasks your computer has to handle in order to play your sequence without rendering. You’re thinking “I have a a fast computer with multiple cores.” Processing capacity reflects your computer’s ability to render, because rendering is the process of calculating many complex mathematical equations to create new rendered video as the result. But we’re trying to increase our computer’s ability to handle more tracks, more effects and more complex sequences without having to render. This is real-time playback ability and is very dependent on how fast your computer can read your video material from your hard drive. When your video is on your internal hard drive, your computer is reading data for your operating system, open applications and your video all from the same source. This can cause congestion. By putting all your project data, video and audio material onto a high performance external hard drive, you are relieving your computer’s internal hard drive of performing double duty.

So the answer to increasing the performance of your video editing/animation/graphics workstation is to go out and buy an external hard drive. Stop right there! Not all external hard drives were designed for video editing. raid controller  Most of them were intended for file backup or photo and music storage. You need a high performance external storage system designed for the much higher demanding tasks of multi-track video playback and rendering. So what makes an external hard drive suitable for video editing?
Factors

Read Speed and RPM’s

This will depend on what type of video you will be working with: compressed (MiniDV, HDV, DVCPROHD, XDCAM, etc..) or uncompressed formats. The faster the read speed, the more complex layers you will be able to playback in real-time. Compressed formats require less speed than uncompressed formats. Your typical internal hard drive has a read speed of 35-45MB/s. External RAID 0 hard drive solutions (containing two hard drives) can over 80MB/s. Solutions with even more hard drives can achieve speeds far beyond that. A hard drive’s speed can be gauged by the RPM rating such as 7200rpm or 5400rpm. Most people know RPM stands for Rotations Per Minute, but no all are clear on what it means for hard drives. On the inside of a hard drive lies a disc that spins. The fast it can spin, the faster data can be transferred. Typically, internal desktop hard drives run at 7200prm while most laptop hard drives run at 5400rpm. There are some higher end laptop models that have 7200rpm hard drives, but manufacturers typically use the slower drives because they require less energy and therefore extend battery life. For media applications look only at drives that are 7200rpm or 10,000rpm (enterprise class) drives.

How To Calculate BMR

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate, and is essentially, the minimum calorie requirement needed to maintain the life of a sedentary animal. If you were asleep for 24 hours a day, the BMR is the amount of energy that your body would burn. There are certain factors which affect how the BMR functions in each person.

Age: The BMR is higher in younger people. Clearly, with age, the metabolic rate slows, and so older people have a different BMR ratio than younger people with identical weight and height.

Height. Taller people have, in generally, higher BMR’s than shorter.

Body Composition: Although two people may weigh the same, they Age calculator can have very different appearances. One person may have a lot of lean muscle tissue, another may have a lot of fat. Generally, as BMR calculations do not take into account what your composition is, this factor is not important when working out a BMR for calorie counting.

It is also important to remember that fasting and starving can significantly reduce the BMR, so if you are calculating this in order to diet, be careful not too cut back too much.

There are two major methods of working out your BMR. The first is known as the ‘General Calculation’. In this, the BMR is equal to your body weight in pounds, times by 10. For example, 200 lbs times 10, equals 2000. This is fairly simple, and combined with a simple calculation for activity levels, should enable you to lose weight through calorie counting. However, this general calculation is an approximation method. In order to work out exactly how much you need to maintain your weight, and how much you need to loose, you need to try out different methods.

A more sophisticated way of calculating BMR is known as the Harris Benedict Equation. This involves two separate methods of calculation, depending upon the sex of the person involved. For a male the equation would be 66 + (13.7 x weight) + (5 x height) – (6.8 x age). So a 200 pound 27 year old man who is 5.10 will have a BMR of 4300. This is the amount he has to eat in order to maintain his current weight. If he wanted to lose weight, at an estimate of one pound a week just by diet, he would eat 3800.

A woman’s BMR score is revealed through the equation: 655 + (9.6 x weight) + (1.7 x height) – (4.7 x age). So a 200 pound 27 year old woman who is 5.10 will have a BMR of 2567.1. This is the amount that she would have to eat in order to maintain her weight. If she wanted to lose weight, again purely through diet, then she would reduce her intake by 500 (3,500 calories equals one pound) calories per day. This would make her intake 2067.1 per day.

You can see the dramatic differences between the two weights, and also the difference between the General calculation, and the Harris-Benedict equation on the other. In practice, the Equation is the best device to work out a more accurate BMR for each person, and also allows the person to recalculate as their weight changes, so you are not always calculating the same amount.

If you feel that the Harris Benedict Equation is not accurate enough for you, then you can also choose to measure your BMR in other ways, including the Underwater Weighing measurement, which is the gold standard for calculating body composition, and you can also do a Skinfold Measurement test, which measures fat folds around the waist, back and other areas. These are the most extreme versions of the BMR calculation spectrum.

Spy Cameras For Home – Factors to Consider Before Buying a Spy Camera For Home

The popularity of hidden spy cameras has skyrocketed in recent years. Business owners have realized that they can monitor employee productivity and reduce theft of merchandise and office products. Spy cameras for home use have also increased in popularity as parents realize they can keep an eye on their kids while they are out or use them as nanny cams to ensure that their kids are being treated well by the babysitter. Suspicious spouses even use hidden cameras to find out if their fears of a cheating spouse are justified or not. If you are in the market for a hidden spy camera, I have provided a quick guide below on different types of cameras and how the work.

You have two options when it comes to types of hidden cameras – wired and wireless. Wireless hidden cameras can run on batteries or be plugged into an outlet for power. The wireless name comes from the fact that it does not require a direct connection to a recording device. They either transit the signal from a transmitter in the camera to the recorder or some even have a built in DVR recorder. The latest spy cameras for home record directly to an SD memory card. An SD memory is the same memory used in digital cameras and camcorders. The size of the memory card determines the amount of recording time available. This type of hidden camera is the easiest to set up and operate and would be my recommendation.

A wired spy camera is more complicated Lawmate USA due to the fact that it does require a direct connection to the recording device. Unless the camera and recorder are in close proximity to each other this can require a run of cable that will have to be concealed in some manner, whether it be run through walls, under carpet, etc… If these wires are not properly concealed you kind of defeat the purpose of having a “hidden camera”.

Manufacturers of hidden cameras have been able to disguise mini wireless spy cameras to look like normal, everyday items that blend in with any decor. They can be disguised as alarm clocks, wall clocks, tissue boxes, books, teddy bears, air fresheners, smoke detectors, and the list goes on and on. This allows you to choose the appropriate spy camera for home based on where you will be placing it, the field of view you desire, and what will look best for your desired placement.

Other factors you may want to consider are the lighting of the area to be recorded. If the light is low or insufficient for good quality video you definitely want to consider a camera with low light recording capabilities. Another great feature to consider would be a motion activated spy camera. If there is a specific area you need to observe but you only need the recording done when there is activity there then a motion activated spy camera is the way to go. This feature will also allow you to maximize your recording capabilities instead of wasting recording space with inactivity.
